How Many Packs Should a New Boutique Order?
One of the most common questions from a new boutique or online seller is simple to ask and genuinely hard to answer with a single number: how many packs should I order to start?
The honest answer is that it depends on three things you control more than you might think: how many categories you're testing at once, how much capital you want tied up in stock before you've sold anything, and how confident you already are in a specific style.
If you're testing, order narrow and let sales decide. Rather than spreading a small budget thinly across many styles, it's usually more informative to order a smaller number of packs across a focused handful of styles you genuinely believe in, then use real sell-through — not guesswork — to decide what to reorder. A wholesale model with no minimum spend exists precisely so you can do this: test a style with a single pack before committing further, rather than being forced into a large first order before you know what your customers actually want.
Separate "proven" stock from "trial" stock. Once you have a few weeks of sales data, you'll usually see a clear split: styles that sold through quickly (worth reordering with confidence) and styles that moved slowly (worth discontinuing, not doubling down on). Treat your ordering as two separate decisions — restocking what's proven, and trialling one or two new styles — rather than one big undifferentiated order.
Match order size to your actual selling capacity, not your ambition. A boutique with a physical shop and steady footfall can usually absorb and sell through more packs per style than a boutique just starting to build an online audience. Be honest with yourself about which one you currently are — you can always scale the number of packs up as your customer base grows.
Don't let seasonality catch you out. Categories like knitwear have a genuine season; ordering too late into it means selling discounted stock instead of full-price stock. Order with enough lead time that new-season styles arrive while the season still has weeks left to run, not days.
There's no universal right answer to "how many packs," but there is a reliable process: start with a focused range, let real sell-through guide your next order, and scale up the categories and styles that prove themselves — rather than trying to guess correctly on day one.
